In the middle of summer classes? They tend to go by pretty fast, especially if you’re in a 4-week course! With logging in to classes every day and assignments due before you know it, it’s good to know that the library is available to help you with any research projects or papers you get assigned this summer. Here’s how to make the best use of the library when time is short!
1. Contact us as soon as possible
If you realize you have a research assignment in class, even if it’s due at the end of the semester, you’ll probably want to get started NOW. There are a lot of steps in a research paper, from choosing a topic to finding good sources, to actually writing the paper and citing your sources. Ask a librarian the best ways to begin. Even if you haven’t started your paper yet, talking to a librarian can help you flesh out your topic idea or provide better places to find sources than a last-minute Google search.
2. Know the ways to reach us
Campus libraries might be closed right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get in touch with a librarian quickly! We offer:
- Live chat: The fastest way to reach us during our online hours, chat with a librarian live by typing a question in our chat box.
- Email: Send a library email for a detailed text response, usually within 24 hours (slightly longer on weekends).
- Personal librarians: Some classes have a librarian built into the course! If you heard your professor mention an embedded or class librarian, they may be able to help you directly in Canvas. You can also email any librarian you’ve worked with before using our online directory.
- Texting: We even offer texting! For shorter questions and quick answers, send a text message to 702-757-6755. Allow 24 hours response time for texts send outside of regular chat hours.
3. Explore all our services
Maybe you don’t need to talk to a librarian, but just want to click through a tutorial on how to write a research paper or how to cite in MLA or APA style. We have online guides, recommended database collections (by subject or listed alphabetically by name), and online sources ranging from articles to ebooks to videos. Need chapters from a summer textbook? There are some pages we may be able to scan some for you. Contact a librarian for more details.
